It’s no secret that racial inequities persist in our healthcare system. Due to unequal access to insurance, the very real history of medical mistreatment, and the implicit biases in modern healthcare, people of color are less likely to receive treatment, even with more severe ailments.

While the growing role of AI in healthcare could help combat these biases, inequities baked into these algorithms could exacerbate them instead.

At Skyler Health, we design algorithms that use our members’ reported experiences as an input. AI tools like these have the potential to reduce barriers to care and address deep-rooted disparities — but only if we are careful about how those tools are designed.
